You’ve been asked to put together an arts and crafts basket for your child’s school as a giveaway. But the basket looks a little blah and too “homemade.” Shrink film to the rescue!
Contrary to what many people think, shrink film can be purchased for use in the home and is ideal for wrapping a basket or other “gift” items. Although it does take a certain knack to get used to the process, it’s relatively easy to work with once you get the hang of it!
Although there are shrink film kits on the market, many shrink film rolls and sheets require zero “specialty devices” to cause them to contract. In fact, numerous types of shrink film can be “shrunk” using nothing more exotic than a hand-held blow dryer.
So the next time you want to put together a basket that elicits “wows,” pick up some shrink film. It’ll be the proverbial icing on the cake!
During the last week of February 2009, all of the top manufacturers of stretch film announced an upcoming industry-wide pricing increase for stretch film and related poly products such as poly bags, bubble wrap, etc. The increase amounts ranged from 8% to as high as 10%.
The reason for these industry-wide increases can always be linked to the pricing and availability of the raw materials involved in manufacturing stretch film (sometimes referred to as shrink wrap). Specifically the pricing of the petroleum resin that’s used in linear low density polyethylen film (LLDPE) controls the overall pricing. Because this petroleum resin is also used in gasoline, one can usually expect stretch film to go up and down whenever consumer gasoline prices fluctuate.
Resin availability is sometimes the largest factor in dictating a price increase. Longer lead times producing stretch film due to resin shortages can and will result in a price increase. That was the reason given in February 2009. In advance of the slowdown this time, resin manufacturers have shut down plants and moved to implement significant maintenance projects. Resin manufacturers stated they would be reinforcing this planned March 2009 increase with another increase due in April.
However, a shocking last minute decision was made on March 23rd to not have a stretch film increase in March due to the slowdown of the economy. All stretch film manufacturers agreed to hold pricing. As far as what will happen in April, we will keep everyone posted here in our blog.
