Packaging Supplies News: Inventor of Innovative Wine Packaging Dies at 92

Cardboard boxes for wine inventor was innovative.

Most people will not recognize the name of Thomas Angove, but I’m sure many of you are familiar with his product. Angove, a South Australian grape cultivator, created the concept of packaging wine in a resealable bag inside of a cardboard box. Angove passed away on March 30, 2010, at the age of 92.

Love it or hate it, boxed wine revolutionized wine packaging in the 1960’s. Some people, including his son, thought the product would never take off. But Angove was persistant, and box wine proved to be a success. The bag inside prevents the wine from oxidizing, keeping wine fresh for a longer period once opened, as opposed to bottles. It’s also lighter and easier to transport. The box is also preferred by some wineries because it’s a less expensive option than bottling. Box wine is also considered to be more environmentally friendly. The cardboard boxes are much lighter than bottles, so the amount of fuel required for transport is less than for bottles.

Angove contributed more to the wine industry than just his famous cask, he was also a pioneer of the stainless steel wine storage tank, and was well-known among winemakers.
